Temporary housing program for hurricane survivors ends

June 30, 2018

The FEMA program that helped Americans impacted by Hurricanes Maria, Irma and Harvey has come to an end. The agency said the program was meant to be a temporary solution, but nearly 2,000 displaced survivors struggle to find permanent housing. In April 2018, Heart of Florida United Way launched its Hurricane Maria Housing Assistance Program to help address the critical unmet need of securing affordable housing for evacuees from Puerto Rico. The program is designed to provide one-time assistance to families to get over the barrier of required first and last months’ rent and utility deposit to secure an affordable rental unit in Central Florida.
