ALEXANDRIA, VA (September 30, 2024)—United Way Worldwide (UWW) today announced the activation of a Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund to help those impacted by Hurricane Helene. The fund will support United Way’s efforts in local communities to mobilize resources to meet the critical humanitarian needs and long-term recovery efforts.
“When disaster strikes, United Way leverages its deep community roots and relationships to mobilize resources and help individuals and families in need,” said Angela F. Williams, President and CEO of United Way Worldwide. “Our goal with this fund is to direct desperately needed resources to the communities devastated by this historic storm and support the long-term recovery.”
Funds raised through UWW’s Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund will be distributed to the United Ways that are coordinating response efforts with local program and agency partners.
Additionally, the 211 systems in the impacted communities have been activated to serve as a critical communication tool to ensure those in need can access disaster information, resources, and support. 211, which is accessible by calling 211 or visiting 211.org, is a free, confidential service, supported by United Way, which connects individuals to resources and services in their local communities.
“During this great time of need, 211 is a vital service that connects people to critical non-emergency services in their local community such as food, shelter, clean-up support, and more,” said Heather Black, Vice President, 211 System Strategy at United Way Worldwide. “Trained 211 community resource specialists play a key role in supporting individuals and families most in need while also ensuring 911 lines are reserved for emergencies.”
Through the Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund, UWW aims to bring together its corporate partners, the United Way network, and other nonprofits to assist those affected by the Hurricane. United Ways will continue to work closely with their emergency operation centers and other nonprofits to meet immediate needs and long-term rebuilding efforts.
