United Way Worldwide President and CEO Asks for Swift and Decisive Action on Child Tax Credit
United Way Worldwide Nudges for Passage of the Child Tax Credit by the Senate
Alexandria, VA - The U.S. House of Representatives passed the vote to strengthen the Child Tax Credit for millions of families below the poverty line. Now, the fate of this legislation rests in the hands of the Senate.
Nationwide, families are forced to make unfair decisions, such as putting food on the table or gas in the car. The Child Tax Credit can help families afford basic necessities or education, all of which can serve to stabilize communities across the country, especially in underserved and rural areas.
In response, Angela F. Williams, President and CEO of United Way Worldwide, released the following statement:
During a time of increasing polarization, our Senate legislators have an opportunity to come together in a bipartisan fashion and improve the lives of millions of families with children living below the poverty line. With the expansion of the Child Tax Credit, more than one-third of Black children could receive significant financial support and benefits could be extended to an estimated 16 million children nationwide.
United Way provides much-needed support to families with low incomes across the country. Through our 211 hotline, we hear from millions of parents every year who are struggling, from paying utility bills to affording adequate health care. The scale of these challenges requires a greater response than our efforts alone. Right now, families need immediate financial relief and long-term stability.
The Child Tax Credit provides extra cash for necessary daily expenses, bridging the gap for families with children. The Senate should pass this expansion so American parents do not have to choose between feeding their families and childcare.
