Financial Security

Creating a stronger financial future for every generation.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to earn a living that can sustain a family and build security for future generations. That’s why we’re partnering to help more adults thrive in a career, live in quality housing and build generational wealth.

Building Women Entrepreneurs

We work with community partners to help hardworking families make ends meet and create a more sustainable future for themselves and their loved ones.

  • United Way’s partnerships help people train for good jobs in thriving sectors and get valuable credentials like diplomas, licenses, and certifications. We also equip people in transition — from new immigrants in Chicago to young adults in Asia — to get the skills they need.

  • Our financial resource centers — where people learn how to manage credit, reduce debt and build assets — make money management skills more accessible. Trained volunteers offer one-on-one financial coaching. And our MySmartMoney site has tips and tools to help people improve their skills online.

  • United Way connects people to short-term shelter, eviction relief and rent support through the 211 help line. We partner to help individuals and families avoid homelessness. And we work to make homeownership an achievable goal for more families.

  • Economic downturns, natural disasters and global health crises can affect small businesses in low-income communities more than the rest of the population. United Way supported small businesses in Los Angeles and New Orleans in the wake of economic crises made worse by COVID. And we developed programs in South Africa to help unemployed people qualify for in-demand jobs.

  • United Way makes it easier for people to get the public benefits they’re entitled to. We operate one-stop resource hubs that help people learn what benefits they can claim. And caring experts at 211 — the 24/7 resource supported by United Way — connect people to public programs.
