Nigeria

Millions of Nigerians are unable to access quality education or healthcare and cannot afford a decent living. Knowing this, businesses, non-profit organizations, individuals and the government have invested extensively in social development, but problems persist. A primary reason why this is so is because our social sectors are program-rich, but system poor. Though several organizations work on solving the complex issues in these sectors, they often do so in isolation leading to diffused effort and limited impact.

HOW WE WORK

To bridge this gap, United Way Greater Nigeria serves as a backbone organization for social change. We facilitate outcome-focused cross-sector coordination, bringing together businesses, individuals and non-profit organizations to deliver measurable, meaningful changes for low and lower-middle income Nigerians. We also partner with companies to help them realize their employee-engagement efforts and achieve their social responsibility goals. We are committed to facilitating sustainable social development for educated, empowered Nigerians who are able to make positive health choices and attain financial independence.

VISION

United Way Greater Nigeria envisions a country where all people attain their full potential in education, sustainable income and healthy lives through diverse individuals and communities that care and celebrate giving.

MISSION

To realize our vision, we aim to be the leading non-profit organization in Nigeria with the largest impact on education, healthcare and income. We improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities to advance the common good.

FOCUS AREA

United Way Greater Nigeria strives to meet the following objectives under each line of action:

Education: Contribute to the provision of access to quality education over time through programs that focus on early learning, eliminate barriers to education for the girl child, facilitate the acquisition of concrete skills for employment, address specific learning difficulties, and enhance opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Healthcare: Contribute to the prevention of disease through a focus on health education and preventive care, and engage in programs that facilitate a reduction in the number of Nigerians who suffer from tropical and communicable diseases.

Financial Stability: Contribute to the financial stability of low and lower-middle income individuals and families, with special emphasis on skills to employment/ entrepreneurship and financial literacy.

PROGRAM AND PROJECT OBJECTIVES

United Way Greater Nigeria has identified its Skills to Employment Program (STEP) as its flagship initiative. STEP equips Nigerian Youth aged between 18-30 with Digital skills to aid them in becoming adequately employed or self-employed. It is geared towards tackling the problems of unemployment and underemployment amongst a teeming Youth population that Nigeria currently has. Unemployment rate in Nigeria currently stands at a whooping 30% and STEP was developed to address this immediate need in our local community. The program includes an internship period after the initial training period to enable participants garner some practical experience before venturing into the labour market. STEP is ably supported by local and international donors including Rack Centre and Lenovo just to mention a few.
