Building Back Afterwards

Since hurricanes slammed into the Southeastern U.S. in September 2024, United Way has been connecting people with essential resources, and supporting plans for interim recovery. With basic infrastructure wiped out, it will take months -- if not years -- to rebuild in many areas.  United Way will be there.

United Way activates at the speed of need to support communities impacted by natural or manmade disasters. We leverage our global community networks to rally support quickly. Long after the first responders leave, we’re helping communities rebuild.

  • United Way and 211 — the 24/7 resource we support — play a vital role in helping communities prepare for disaster, including sharing evacuation routes and shelter locations. Read how New Jersey’s 211 offered logistical support during a tropical storm. During the pandemic, 31 U.S. governors designated 211 as the go-to for information. Learn more about the first year of United Way’s COVID support — financial and on the ground — here.

  • United Way mobilizes resources where — and when — they’re needed most, from flooding in India to wildfires in Maui. That means raising money as well as  distributing food, water and essential supplies. It also means facilitating support from other United Ways. And it all happens in in real time.

  • Long-term recovery needs can last for years, but United Way is there for the long haul. United Way’s Hurricane Katrina recovery team operated in New Orleans for 10 years. So we could quickly begin relief and recovery operations when severe floods hit the same neighborhoods just five months apart in 2016. That robust mobilization — of resources, volunteers, case management, construction services and financial assistance to NGOs — can be replicated around the world.

  • Some 114 million people were displaced in 2023 due to war and violence. United Ways across Europe helped Ukrainian refugees. And we continue to play a vital role in strengthening community supports in their new countries. Read about our innovative efforts to address refugees’ housing and mental health as well as job, language and education challenges.
